David and Goliath – Downie and Malkin. No relation to Gord, the Super-Pest helped Canada in their 5-0 pimp-slap of the Russians, as you may or may not know. I don’t watch a lot of World Junior Hockey. In fact, I’ve never watched any. But Downie’s performance, spunk and grit reeks of a little Goon in the making.

Technically he’s a promising star right winger – but Goon, as we like to bestow the title, can be about the ‘tude too. But regardless, if he were a little taller and heavier Steve would undoubtedly be a bonafide bruiser-to-be. And then there’s that silly little habit he has of attacking his teammates.
The rules have changed in the NHL (literally) and little Stevie could be a slugging star in Philly (by way of being kicked off the Windsor Spitfires) if he can get past all the cross-checking in the head nonsense. This tournament win may have redeemed his tattered reputation, has definitely ensured him a chance at the show, and I suppose we’ll see where the bugger ends up. Be it the Flyers or be it anger management counseling. It’s Friday night and I’m rambling. Have a great weekend, everyone.
As a Flyers fan, I hope Downie makes it.
Have to see how well he does with the Phantoms when he gets to the AHL.

I saw the Canada vs. USA tilt on New Years Eve. Downie was everywhere. Jack Johnson, the third pick overall last year, tried to kill him with a flying elbow at the end of the game. That to me is a sign you’ve done your job. When someone takes the frustration of a big loss out on you like that. Bob MacKenzie siad of him when Philly drafted him, that he was Bobby Clarke’s clone. This kid will be a Goonblog favorite for year’s to come.

It would not surprise me at all to see Downie crack the Flyers lineup this fall. The kid can flat out play, and is a real agitator. Two traits we at GB look for.

I Live in Peterborough where steve plays, and to be honest with ya, the only reason i go to the petes games now, is to watch him go nuts on guys. When he drops the gloves, the whole arena is on there feet watchin his brutal beating that he lays out! I LOVE THE KID…BEST TRADE THE PETES HAVE EVER MADE..AND A WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPION PLAYIN IN A LITTLE TOWN LIKE PETERBOROUGH
